Read The End of Business as Usual for Social Media Insights ...

The End of Business as UsualAt the end of each year and into the beginning of the next, we take stock of where we?ve been and where we are about to go.?? TV shows and magazines look back on the significant events of the year, and then prognosticators predict what?s yet to come.

One of the best prognosticators out there (although he may not take to being called that) is Brian Solis (@briansolis).? In 2010 he wrote the book Engage, which leads you through the specific steps you need to take to conceptualize, implement, manage and measure a social media program.

I had the privilege of interviewing Brian Solis for an article I wrote for Personal Branding Magazine.? In some ways, he reminded me of Matthew Broderick?s character Ferris Bueller; fun, smart and super-savvy about the ways of the social media environment and how to play it.? Solis knows how to navigate, pull the technological strings and use these tools to business advantage.

But wait, there?s more

And new for 2012, Solis has released The End of Business as Usual: Rewire the Way You Work to Succeed in the Consumer Revolution.? This book takes you to the next level, taking social media away from the context of tool and into the context of strategy.? Let me put it another way:? We don?t write about telephones or microwaves or stoves as revolutionary tools for communication or cooking.? We?ve integrated these items into our lives.? Business as Usual does the same thing for us in terms of social media.? Solis is taking the tools and technologies we?ve been enamored with and pushing us into accepting them as tangible, real and unimportant as tools, but vitally important in terms of what we do with them.

The End of Business as Usual is a bellwether

If you like Groundswell, then you will love this. This is a business book, a social media book and a trend book all in one.? It?s 20 chapters and 300 pages of lesson after lesson, insight after insight, and terrific charts and graphics that give you a perspective on what Solis is talking about.

There are so many facts and figures in this book relating to what?s going on in social media that you could probably tweet out a stat every day and have enough to last you a couple of years.? I?m not sure if I?m exaggerating, but I think I?m pretty close.

Here are just a few chapter names that will give you some idea of what to expect:

Chapter 3: The medium is no longer the message. This is the core message of the book. People are spending more time on social networks, TV shows are live tweeted, news comes from Twitter online video networks ? in other words, social is as integrated into our lives as phones and appliances.

Chapter 4: ?Attention deficit crises and information scarcity: This chapter addresses one of the key reasons I admire Brian Solis: ?If you don?t have anything interesting or productive to say ? then don?t say it.?? While Solis is a social media expert and evangelist, I respect his integrity in terms of using social media as a valuable communication channel rather than a vehicle for pabulum.

Chapter 7: Your audience is now an audience of audiences with audiences: This chapter has terrific visuals and charts to show you exactly how communication and information functions in the social media world.? This chapter is worth reading and rereading.

Chapter 11: The rise of connected commerce: You?ve already heard the phrase ?blurring the line between personal and business. This chapter gives you the background on how and why this is happening.? Mobile devices, constant connection and communication will force business to look and feel more personal.

Chapter 14: Reinventing the brand and sales cycle for a new genre of connecter commerce: The message in this chapter is to plug into decision making. We?ve never had better access to data about our customers? behavior.? Businesses will have to become masters at managing their brand promises.

Who should read this book?

To say that anyone who intends to be in business over the next three to five years should read this book is an understatement.? Business owners will see data and research that will help them create a context for the world that they and their customers are participating in.

Sales and marketing professionals will get insights and be able to develop much more powerful marketing strategies that get to the heart of what?s important to their customers.

Social media practitioners will have evidence and resources to share with their clients that will show exactly why the strategies they are proposing will work.

At the risk of sounding over the top, The End of Business as Usual is a book you absolutely, positively must read to succeed in 2012 and beyond.

HP Folio 13 review

By the time HP unveiled its first Ultrabook, the Folio 13, other heavyweights like Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Toshiba had already gotten a head start of up to several months. But being fashionably late to market may have worked in Hewlett-Packard's favor: the Folio 13 ($900 and up) is temptingly priced for what it is. Even the base model comes stocked with a 128GB SSD, backlit keyboard, HDMI port and Ethernet jack -- specs that undercut the ASUS Zenbook UX31 and 13-inch MacBook Air, and render the $900 Acer Aspire S3 nearly irrelevant. Not to mention, it brings business-friendly features like TPM that other Ultrabook makers have omitted from their 1.0 products. But surely HP cut some corners to get here, no? Is this really as sweet a deal as it seems? Funnily enough, the answer is "yes," on both counts.

The Celebrity of the Year: Kim Kardashian!

We've reached the top of our Celebrity of the Year countdown. Or, as many might say, given the winner, the bottom.

The THG staff has spent the last couple weeks breaking down the most newsworthy stars of 2011, from Lindsay Lohan at #10, up to the impressive comeback of Jennifer Lopez at #9, to the popularity of Selena Gomez at #8 and the hilarity of viral video stars at #7.

There was the hit-generating Katy Perry at #6, Justin Bieber and his hair at #5, those gorgeous British Royal Family members at #4, Charlie Sheen and his winning ways at #3 and the most charitable, eccentric celeb of all at #2, Lady Gaga.

So who remains? The woman who accomplished both everything and nothing in 2011, our #1 selection of the year... Kim Kardashian!

Kim Kardashian Motivational Poster

For the record, this is a business decision. We do not like Kim Kardashian. We wish we never had to write a word about Kim Kardashian. We fail to see why a single human being is a fan of Kim Kardashian. But the facts speak for themselves, and no celebrity made more headlines in 2011. Consider:

In JANUARY: Kim kicked off the new year by debuting a single that made Kim Zolciak sound like Whitney Houston. She also met the family of Kris Humphries for the first time and premiered the highly-rated, critically-lambasted Kourtney & Kim Take New York.

In February: She starred in a Super Bowl commercial and whined over her latest nude photo spread. It also came out that she and her family made $65 million in 2010.

In MARCH: She appeared in a Midori ad campaign, as buzz first circulated that she might marry Humphries.

In APRIL: She lashed out at Turkish Cosmo and posed on many red carpets in a cleavage-baring dress.

In MAY: She came out with a new fragrance, got angry over the misuse of her bare boobs and, oh, got engaged to Humphries.

In JUNE: She appeared on the covers of multiple tabloids and defended herself against rumors of infidelity.

In JULY: She took photos of herself in Humphries' hometown and got into trouble for complaining about the Casey Anthony verdict.

In AUGUST: She married Humphries. Perhaps you heard about it.

In SEPTEMBER: She honeymooned with Kris while her publicists plotted how to best announce the upcoming divorce. Someone also tried to purchase the rights to her sex tape.

In OCTOBER: She turned 31 and rumors started to swirl that her marriage was already in trouble. She ended the month by filing for divoce.

In NOVEMBER: She whined and cried and played ignorant as to why anyone would dare questions her motives to marry. She visited Australia and Minnesota and premiered season two of Kourtney & Kim Take New York. Over three million people tuned in.

In DECEMBER: She was considered one of the Most Fascinating People of 2011 by Barbara Walters and will conclude her most prosperous year to date the only way she knows how: by standing around a club in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve and earning $600,000.

Crowding in ER May Delay Pain Relief for Kids (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Overcrowding in emergency rooms appears to keep children with broken arms and legs from getting pain relief in a timely manner, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine said their findings are significant since these injuries, known as long bone fractures, are common among children and very painful.

"Pain associated with long bone fractures can be pretty severe," study author Dr. Marion Sills said in a university news release. "But crowded emergency departments are impacting the delivery of care on many levels, including the delivery of pain medication."

In conducting the study, published in the December issue of the journal Academic Emergency Medicine, researchers examined 1,229 children treated in an ER over the course of one year. They found the children were 4 percent to 47 percent less likely to receive treatment in a timely fashion when the ER was very crowded (at the 90th percentile) than when it was less crowded (at the 10th percentile). The researchers also found the children were 3 percent to 17 percent less likely to receive effective care in these crowded conditions.

"The relationship between emergency department crowding and pain treatment is not unexpected," noted Sills. "When the emergency department gets busier, staff may be less responsive to the needs of individual patients and, as a result, patients have a higher likelihood of non-treatment and delays in treatment."

The authors said delays happen in some cases when only doctors are permitted to provide certain pain medications to patients.

"The expensive way to mitigate crowding is to hire more staff. Another way is to leverage the staff you have," Sills said. "Institutions can use techniques like protocols for pain management with standing orders for nurses, and computer- or phone-based alerts to call attention to under-treated pain."

Crowding is a serious issue, said Sills. "It is caused by a variety of things, from patients who too readily use emergency departments to federal policies that exacerbate the problem," she noted. "We as a nation need to get serious about this. Crowding needs to be a policy priority at every level."
