If you experience frequent heartburn you may well have started looking into what foods help with the symptoms and have come across a huge list of suspects.

You might well be forgiven for believing that life after acid reflux will be a little boring, certainly as far as your diet is concerned.

Read about heartburn in any magazine and they seem to be telling you to cut out all your favorite snacks, meals and drinks, eat boring, low calorie, low fat foods with no taste and at all costs?..do not drink coffee or alcohol.

GERD - Acid reflux disease, call it what you will, will change your life. That is without doubt.

Constant heartburn and acid indigestion wears you out, is tiring and just plain unpleasant. You begin to think that you are willing to do anything to stop your suffering.

But?.before you stop eating all your favorite things, do two things. Re-assess your lifestyle Do your research

Lifestyle

All of us have bad habits that we have developed as we go through life and some of them are bad habits that will aggravate heartburn.

Why do you think that acid reflux disease is prevalent in people over forty? We have had more time to perfect our bad habits.

Eat too quickly? - slow down - You will improve your digestion and probably eat less into the bargain, both will help with heartburn.
Do you eat too much? - small regular meals are better than overeating
How much alcohol do you drink? - Alcoholic drinks relax the muscle at the base of the esophagus and contributes to heartburn and acid reflux.
Do you eat late in the evening? - Try not to eat within three hours of your normal bedtime. It will help with heartburn and also help control your weight.
Are you overweight - lose weight. Excess weight is a major cause of acid reflux as extra fat stored around your internal organs puts pressure on your stomach, and it does the same to your heart!!
Eat junk food? That was not a command. If you do, just try to eat it less often. Fresh is best where acid indigestion is concerned.

Do Your Research?

When you first see the long list of foods to avoid for heartburn you may well go into a panic. Don't. It is a list of foods that are suspected of causing or aggravating acid reflux. Just because it's on the list it does not mean that you mustn't eat it.

Keep a food diary! Every time that you experience acid reflux, write down what you had to eat before hand. It's also worth thinking about what you were doing before you got acid indigestion. Lie down after eating and no matter what you have eaten you will get acid reflux. Bend over so that your stomach is compressed - and you will get acid reflux. Exercise too soon after eating - and you develop acid indigestion.
