GOP Asks Embattled County Councilman To Resign

The Madison County GOP is calling for the resignation of one of their own, Councilman David McCartney.Last week, the Call 6 Investigators exposed McCartney using the county email system to send dozens of inappropriate emails as well as campaign on the clock.McCartney is an employee with the county assessor?s office and is running for Madison County commissioner. At first, McCartney claimed the emails were part of a plan to expose his political naysayers, but he later apologized, RTV6's Kara Kenney reported.Madison County Republican Chair Troy Jerrils told RTV6 he?s disappointed about the ?obvious deception and attempted cover-up.??It?s not an appropriate use of taxpayer money or equipment,? said Jerrils. ?We as the party felt that if a statement wasn't made to that effect it would be condoning that and we simply can't."Jerrils said McCartney needs to take a break from public office and focus on his family.?Financially that might be a burden on him, but ultimately, that?s what?s going to be best,? said Jerrils.Through a public records request, Call 6 Investigators reviewed dozens of emails and found McCartney sending and receiving emails unrelated to county business on his county email account and county computer, throughout his 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. work hours.?You are too sweet, just so happens you taste sweet as well,? McCartney wrote in a February 21 email exchange with Montgomery County Assessor Kelly Ewoldt, both on their county accounts during work hours.?I know, looking forward to seeing your lovely face,? responded Ewoldt. ?And yes baby, you taste sweet.??You are one sexy assessor!!!!? McCartney wrote on Feb. 17 at 9:54 a.m.?Am I pulling you from your work?? McCartney wrote on Feb. 14 at 2:27 p.m. ?No, not in the mindset to do much today,? responded Ewoldt. In a Jan. 23 email at 2:55 p.m., McCartney appears to brag to an employee in the Madison County prosecutor?s office about a recent conference.?(Fifty-dollar) steaks and free beer. I was in heaven, not to mention all the hot (pieces) of (expletive),? read the email.McCartney earns $13,297 as a council member and $26,306 as a reassessment deputy with the assessor?s office.County policy prohibits county employees from sending sexually explicit messages, and also bans using work hours to engage in political activity. The policy also states county email cannot be used to solicit others for political causes, or other non-county business matters.Taxpayers to whom RTV6 spoke with said McCartney needs to take a break from office."To use our time and money for personal issues, that's a waste of money,? said taxpayer Michael Arnold, a 30-year resident of Madison County. ?There's too much of it going on already without just having to add to it.?McCartney told RTV6 he has no plans to resign or drop out of the race, and he faces Republican John Richwine in the primary for Madison County Commissioner.Meanwhile, Republicans are working to repair their image, one they say was damaged by McCartney?s indiscretions."When we do have issues like this, we don't want to sweep them under the carpet,? said Jerrils. ?We will make sure the public knows we will not stand for it.? As a councilman, McCartney holds the purse strings for Madison County. His term expires in January 2015.Ewoldt has not responded to RTV6's requests for comment on her emails exchanged with McCartney.Montgomery County attorney Daniel Taylor did not respond to repeated requests for comment on Ewoldt?s emails.Commissioner Phil Bane told RTV6 Friday he was unaware of any investigation under way.
