Motorcycling Makes a Vital Contribution to National Goals Say MCI ...

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has today launched a new Policy Framework which makes the case that support for motorcycling and the industry can mean valuable benefits for the UK and civil society as a whole. The industry?s contribution to national goals, such a rebalanced economy, cleaner transport, social inclusion and national sporting pride are outlined and proposals for Government support are set out.

The industry?s Policy Framework for Motorcycling, which can be found on the MCI website (www.mcia.co.uk), also sets out the MCI?s role in bringing together industry and Government in pursuit of individual and shared goals.

The UK motorcycle industry has long made the case for motorcycling in transport, environmental and business policy. As a ?7.2billion industry, employing 62,000 people in over 6,000 businesses, it is clear that the motorcycle sector is an important contributor to the UK economy.

It is an industry with a proud manufacturing tradition. The motorcycle sector not only encompasses engineering and component supply, but boasts possibly the largest solely UK owned automotive manufacturer; Triumph Motorcycles. Triumph exports around 80% of approximately 50,000 motorcycles manufactured and has a growing presence on the international stage. Norton Motorcycles is resurgent and other British manufacturers add their products to an industrial sector with enormous potential vitality.

But the motorcycle industry needs recognition and support if it is to realise its maximum potential and fully contribute to the UK?s economic recovery. In addition to a properly balanced Government transport policy and rider licensing policy, the industry needs to be recognised by other Government departments such as the Business Innovation and Skills Department and included in automotive and industrial policy making.

MCI CEO Steve Kenward said: ?The Framework marks a new approach to industry public policy, which for the first time underlines how motorcycling matters to broader society and how support for the industry is good for the nation. The Framework does not mark a change of MCI policy on key areas where industry feels it is justified in demanding support or a change in Government policy, such as on rider licensing and on European proposals for design and construction (Type Approval). However the Framework illustrates why these issues matter to the nation, are not just about motorcycling, but about how society as a whole can benefit from Government support for motorcycling.?
